Indian World Cup winner involved in a cheque bounce case
Munaf Patel is a part of a firm against which a case has been filed.
Former India medium pacer Munaf Patel was summoned by a Delhi court in a cheque bounce case filed by one Sunil Kumar Aggarwal. Munaf hasn’t played for India since September 2011 but was a pivotal member of the World Cup winning squad of 2011. Munaf will have to appear in the court on November 1 besides six other people who are also accused.
Munaf a director of the defaulting firm
Munaf had fallen off the ranks just five months after been a part of the team who lifted the title at Wankhede in Mumbai. Sunil, a resident of Delhi, filed a complaint under the provision of the Negotiable Instruments Act against Nivas Promoters Pvt. Ltd, a company in which Munaf is a director. A payment of Rs 25.50 lacs was made to Sunil but the cheque got dishonored by the bank last month. Sunil complained that it had issued a notice to the company but they failed to make the payment to him.
“There is sufficient material on record to summon all the accused persons. Therefore, a prima facie case punishable under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act is made out against them. This court, therefore, takes cognizance of offence,” the court said while summoning the cricketer and others in the case.
Munaf appeared in IPL-10
Munaf was recently seen in action in the IPL, where he played under Suresh Raina at Gujarat Lions. He, however, played in just two games in a dismal campaign by the last year’s table toppers. The 34-year old had also turned up for his state side Baroda in a handful of games this season. Munaf’s career has always been marred by injuries which cut short his stint in the international circuit.
He won just 13 Test caps for India after making a memorable debut against England at Mohali in 2006. In ODIs, he fared better, picking 86 wickets from 70 games as compared to 35 from 13 in Tests. The Ikhar-born cricketer was a member of the Rajasthan Royals side that lifted the inaugural edition of the IPL under the leadership of Shane Warne in 2008.
