The Indian team looked decimated and helpless after the first two Test matches being completely outplayed by England and that invited some strong criticism for the Virat Kohli-led side. However, they came back at Trent Bridge with a scintillating 203-run victory over the hosts to announce their arrival in this five-match Test series. India completely outclassed the opposition in all the three major departments of the game in the third Test match.
The Indian batters, the superb slip catching by KL Rahul and debutant wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and especially the phenomenal display of fast bowling put up by the Indian bowlers proved to be the difference between the two sides. Along with all that, their most preferred pacer Jasprit Bumrah was also back in the attack and he made it count in the second innings.
Runs on the board
The major concern before the third Test match for India was that the batsmen had failed to put up runs on the board. Getting runs in the first innings is a very important especially in the overseas Tests and it also gives the bowlers freedom and luxury of some runs to work with. During the third Test, India found themselves in a similar disappointing position as they were reduced to 82/3 at lunch on Day 1, but then the skipper Virat stitched a crucial fourth-wicket partnership worth 159 runs with Ajinkya Rahane to help them post a fighting total of 329 runs on the board.
Pandya-Bumrah combo leads India to a sensational victory
The Indian bowlers were absolutely relentless in their approach and bowled out the hosts in just one session to ensure their team had a massive 168-run first innings lead. All-rounder Hardik Pandya was the star with the ball as he picked his maiden five-wicket haul to rip through the English batting.
The Indian batters once again continued their good work with the bat in the second innings and Kohli led them from the front with his 23rd Test century as Cheteshwar Pujara and Pandya scored half-centuries as well, to help India post a daunting target of 521 runs for England in the fourth innings.
It was expected to be a heavy and almost impossible task for the hosts to survive with two days to play in the Test match. Jasprit Bumrah who was making a comeback into the team after sitting out the whole of the T20I, ODI series and the first two Tests with an injury. His five-wicket haul hit the final nail on England’s coffin for the match and crushed all the hope.
After the conclusion of the match, Bumrah tweeted a photo standing under the honours board and was delighted to claim the second five-wicket haul in just his fourth Test match.
“Team work makes the dream work. Brilliant team effort to clinch the win and a fifer to cherish forever” he wrote.
