India’s top 3 in limited-overs cricket are unmatched, says Sourav Ganguly
The top three were amongst the leading run-scorers in the 50-overs formats last year.
India might have the task of setting up their middle order for the upcoming World Cup yet incomplete but there is no doubt that the Men in Blue’s top three are waiting for the mega event to kick off. The two openers – Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan – along with captain Virat Kohli at No.3 (unless India decide to play him consistently at No.4 in the tournament) will have to shoulder India’s batting responsibility at the WC if they are to do well as the remaining line-up is far too unsettled at the moment.
Although the two openers haven’t been in the best of form (excepting the 193-run partnership against Australia in Mohali of course), yet they give the team the much-needed confidence at the top. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is also a believer in the trio’s ability and in fact, he thinks that Rohit-Shikhar-Kohli make up a line-up that is unmatched in the cricketing world at the moment.
The 46-year-old Ganguly, who was recently roped in as an advisor by Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) for the upcoming season, spoke at a press conference organised by the franchise where he spoke on diverse issues – from the DC squad to India’s preparation for the WC. India will play their first match against South Africa in Southampton on June 5.
“Team India ke top 3 jo hai, kisi aur ke paas itni quality nahi hai (No team in the world can match the quality of Team India’s top three),” Ganguly said about the trio who has 79 hundreds between them in ODIs.
India’s openers were not in great form in the recent series against Australia
In the recent five-game series against Australia that India lost despite leading 2-0, neither Rohit nor Shikhar was in their natural best. While Rohit hit two fifties, Shikhar played only one innings of significance (143 in Mohali). Kohli did better by hitting two consecutive hundreds in Nagpur and Ranchi, yet he was pushed around between the No.3 and No.4 positions since India could not find a stable batsman at No.4.
Ganguly also backed young wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant to be selected as the second gloveman in the WC squad despite his ordinary run in the limited-over formats so far. Pant plays for the same DC that has hired Ganguly.
