For Shikhar Dhawan, it is quite a tough phase of his career. The 33-year-old opening batsman has hit a century in his last match, that too in the World Cup, but is unlikely to play for some time now. Reason: He got his thumb fractured while batting in the same innings in which he scored a ton against Australia at the Oval last Sunday. Dhawan scored a scintillating 117 off 109 balls to help India beat the defending champions by 36 runs to win their second successive game in the tournament.

Although India have roped in Rishabh Pant as Dhawan’s cover, the latter hasn’t been released as his injury is being constantly monitored and the effort is on to make him play as early as possible. India had another game after his injury which was against New Zealand at Trent Bridge on Thursday but it was abandoned because of rain. India next play Pakistan at Old Trafford on Sunday and the fans of the Men in Blue will miss ‘Gabbar’ who has belted a century along with Rohit Sharma the last time India played the arch-rivals.

Dhawan, who has done his best to keep the spirits high by tweeting a ‘Shayari’, is also making it to the gym to ensure that he is in shape. The left-hander will be assessed around 21st-22nd of this month and the team is expecting him to play the crucial England clash at Edgbaston on June 30.

Dhawan shared a video on his official Twitter account showing him sweating it out in teh gym. In that video, he has also thanked the fans for all their good wishes ever since teh news about his injury broke.

Here is Dhawan’s workout video:

India’s batting coach Sanjay Bangar has said earlier that Team India doesn’t want to lose a “precious player” like Dhawan. Dhawan, who suffered the injury in the bowling of Australian seamer Pat Cummins, is just one hundred short of matching the elite record of scoring the most number of tons in ICC events held jointly by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. Dhawan’s third World Cup century at the Oval has now taken him to six in ICC tournaments.
