Inzamam-ul-Haq laments missing out on a chance to score 400 in Lahore Test against New Zealand in 2002

Inzamam-ul-Haq holds many records in Pakistan cricket and one of them is the second-highest ever individual score in Test cricket from his country. The right-handed batsman had scored a superb knock of 329 runs against New Zealand in Lahore in 2002. The effort still remains one of the best knocks ever. Recalling his efforts in that match, Inzamam recently opened up and said he feels he could have got a quadruple century in the game.

Talking about his marathon innings, Inzamam said that it was the biggest inning he has ever played. He recalled that it was really hot in Lahore that day and Imran Nazir had also scored a century while also stating that the Kiwi players looked tired when he crossed the 300-run mark. This is when he decided to score as much runs as he can quickly.

“329 was a very memorable inning for me, my biggest innings in all of cricket. The special thing about that day was that it was extremely hot. Imran Nazir also made a hundred then and we were on top. As I built my innings, the poor Kiwi players were getting very tired. When I passed 300, their body language told me that you can score as much as you want, just let us go”, he was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, who was the last batsman to get dismissed in that innings, also felt that if he had a batsman with him on the crease, he might have had a chance of creating the world record. The 50-year-old mentioned that the runs were coming quite quickly and he could have reached the 400-run mark if he had batted for another hour.

“If I had batsmen alongside me and we were 5-6 down, I think I had the opportunity to make a world record. There was no time factor and the runs were also coming fast. Maybe I could have gone on to make more than 400 runs. I just needed one more hour to get to that mark,” the 50-year-old added.

Pakistan were bowled out for 643 runs, as Inzy was dismissed for 329. His runs came off just 436 balls, with 38 fours and nine sixes. They won the Test match by an innings and 324 runs. Two years later, West Indian legend Brian Lara scored 400 runs against England in Antigua. He remains the first and only man to do so in Test cricket.
