IPL: 10 Captains with highest win percentage in the league

Rajasthan Royals are more than likely to miss out on the playoffs spot but the start of their journey under new captain Steve Smith is very promising. The franchise handed the reigns to the former Australia captain after the team’s woeful displays under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane. The inaugural winners of the competition were just not managing to do well under Rahane, winning just a couple of times in 8 games which all but threw them out of the playoffs race.

Smith started his captaincy stint with Royals by guiding the team to an impressive 4-wicket win over three-time winners Mumbai Indians. In the following game, he tasted his first defeat as Kings XI Punjab beat the Royals by 12 runs. However, the Steve Smith-led side bounced back in style on Thursday to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by three wickets in a thriller at the Eden Gardens. Chasing 176, the Royals were in all sorts of trouble after being reduced to 98 for 5.

However, teenager Riyan Parag starred with the bat, scoring a stroke-filled 47 while Jofra Archer smashed an unbeaten 27 from just 12 balls to fire the Royals to a win with four balls to spare. With that win, Smith became the captain with the highest win percentage in the IPL with the criteria being the player captaining for a minimum of ten games. With a win percentage of 65.38, Smith is well ahead of second-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson.

Smith, who led the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant to the final in 2017, has so far captained 26 matches, winning 17 of those while ending up on the losing side on the remaining 9 occasions. Williamson, on the other hand, has tasted win in 13 of the 21 games he has played as captain. Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni is third in the list while Sachin Tendulkar and Cameron White complete the top five.
