Whoever said low scoring games were not exciting got a battering on their face as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) created history by bowling out Royal Challengers Bangalore for the lowest ever score in T20 history. It was simply an exceptional piece of bowling by the KKR pacers which enabled the hosts to bowl RCB out for a mere 49 runs within the 10th park.
It was a great day at the office for the Kolkata bowlers and they will surely remember this win for a long time. It was all pace used by the KKKR captain Gautam Gambhir and it paid rich dividends. The RCB batsmen had no answer to the pace and swing of the KKR bowlers and succumbed like nine pins.
Earlier in the day KKR only managed to score a meagre 131 after batting first despite getting off to a great start. RCB made a sensational comeback in the bowling department which hurt the hosts badly. Winning the toss, Virat Kohli asked the hosts to bat. KKR persisted with Sunil Narine and the ploy paid off for yet another time.
Narine smashed his countryman Samuel Badree for 18 runs in the very first over and it was ominous signs for Kohli and Co. It was all proper cricketing shots as Narine made full use of the fielding restrictions. It was the turn of Gambhir to get into the act as the southpaw smashed Tymal Mills for a six over the 3rd man region.
Left-arm pacer Sreenath Arvind wasn’t spared either as Narine smashed him for a hat-trick of boundaries in the 3rd over as KKR raced to 39/0 in the 3rd over. Mills brought an end to Gambhir’s innings as the left arm seamer foxed him with a well disguised slower delivery. After smashing a couple of boundaries of Stuart Binny in the 6th over Narine fell while attempting to up the ante further.
There was a procession of sorts from there on as KKR kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Yuzvendra Chahal bagged a couple of wickets in the 12th over which halted the visitors’ progress. While Pandey failed to the middle a low full toss, Yusuf was totally out thought by Chahal as he fired a delivery down the leg side and the swashbuckling batsman was stumped by Kedar Jadhav.
Chris Woakes played some delightful shots in a bid to resurrect the innings. He played some exceptional shots through the extra cover region but was eventually dismissed in an attempt to up the scoring rate after making 18 of 21 deliveries.
Suryakumar Yadav played a terrible shot to get himself out as KKR was bowled out for 131 in the final over. Sreenath Arvind finished off proceedings by castling Kuldeep Yadav with a slower delivery. Defending a below par target, wickets were the order of the day for KKR and it was just what the KKR pacers did from the outset.
Nathan Coulter-Nile began with a huge no ball in the very first delivery but the big man from Jamaica, Chris Gayle failed to connect on the free hit. Meanwhile, captain Kohli edged an away swinging delivery straight to the slip cordon. Manish Pandey held on to it after two attempts. Mandeep Singh was sent ahead of De Villiers and the ploy didn’t work.
Mandeep gave a straightforward catch to the point fielder as RCB was reduced to 3/2. De Villiers began with a couple of boundaries but the venom and pace of Coulter-Nile hurried him as the right-hander top-edged a fast delivery straight up in the air. Robin Uthappa almost made a mess of it but eventually held on to it to give KKR their 3rd wicket.
Kedar Jadhav came out in the middle and began with a couple of boundaries of Coulter-Nile but feel to the same while attempting a flick. It was a dire situation for RCB and there only hope was the universal boss Chris Gayle. It didn’t turn out to be Gayle’s day as Chris Woakes brought an end to his innings with a short of length delivery. He was cramped for room and gave away a simple catch top the cover fielder.
Wickets kept tumbling one after the other as it was the turn of Colin de Granhomme to join in the fun. He began with the wicket of Pawan Negi and finished off proceedings with wickets of Tymal Mills and Yuzvendra Chahal as RCB was bowled out for the lowest score in IPL history.
