Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma looked absolutely dejected after his side lost the first Qualifier against the Rising Pune Supergiant at Mumbai. Going into the game, the Mumbai Indians were believed to have the upper hand since they were playing at their home venue in Mumbai. However, the Supergiant also fancied their chances owing to the fact that they had beaten Mumbai Indians twice in the league stages.
In the match, it was a superlative cameo from MS Dhoni that helped RPS put on 162/4 in their 20 overs. In the run chase, the table toppers fell short by 20 runs. With the win, the RPS camp has now advanced to the finals of the tournament. On the other hand, MI will have another go at the finals when they play against the winner of the Eliminator in the Qualifier 2.
After the defeat, Rohit Sharma reflected that the target in hand should have been overhauled. He called the effort from his men as the worst batting performance of the season. He noted that the absence of partnerships hurt them dearly in the match.
“I think 160 was below par to be honest, having seen the scores chased here. Probably the worst batting performance of this season for us. We didn’t have enough partnerships, it’s crucial to get small partnerships in. They bowled well to restrict us and to take wickets in the middle overs,” said Rohit Sharma.
Poor shot selection
He further added that the shot selection is very important in the game. Players should have analyzed the situations before going for reckless shots. He is now looking forward to the Qualifier 2.
“The shot selection is very important. You need to understand the situation and the conditions and respect them. You’ve to pick the gaps and take it to the end and we didn’t do that. It’s not the end of the world, we still have one more shot in Bangalore,” he conceded.
