IPL 2018: After shifting CSK’s home games to Pune, MCA asked to take water from irrigation department
Maharashtra suffers from acute water shortages in the month of April and May
The Chennai Super Kings’ happy homecoming to the Chepauk stadium was shortlived as the home matches were shifted to Pune due to political tensions regarding the Cauvery Management Board. The protesters hurled shoes into the stadium that raised concerns over players safety and eventually forced the management to relocate the matches.
The home games were shifted to the MCA stadium in Pune. However, there are issues to be dealt with in Pune as well. It is the summer season and Maharashtra suffers from acute water shortages. In such a scenario, it is not possible to provide gallons of water just for pitch and ground maintenance. The MCA admitted that they were asked to take water from irrigation department for ground and pitch maintenance for the six Indian Premier League (IPL) but the Bombay Court has ordered the MCA to use sewage treated water and not the drinking water.
Source of Water
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had admitted its failure in provide any special water for the conduct of six home games of Chennai Super Kings. Refusing to provide any additional water after CSK’s matches were shifted to the Gahunje stadium, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority on Saturday asked the MCA to confirm the “sources of water” that is to be used.
“A detailed letter has been written to the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), asking how they will arrange water for maintaining the ground for the IPL matches. They will have to give us the water sources and we will verify them.” Kiran Gitte, PMRDA chief was quoted as saying by timesnownews.com.
This issue puts CSK’s home matches to be held in Pune in jeopardy. If the MCA fails to explain the proper sources of water to be used, CSK may have to look for another home venue to play its matches. The yellow army has won two out of three games so far and would like this issue to be sorted out before the tournament starts to get more interesting.
