The man who led the Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles had a new challenge in IPL 2018. Gautam Gambhir had the task of leading a side that has performed relatively poor in the IPL with the franchise tasting the wooden spoon more often than not. The Delhi Daredevils have undergone major overhaul on several occasions but haven’t performed well on the field. With the arrival of Gambhir, it was believed that the team may just have figured the missing piece and were expected to do well.

After all the build-up and drama around the IPL, the Daredevils find themselves on the wrong side of the points table again. They have just one win from six games as the team has failed to pull up a string of strong performances. In the wake of poor performances, Gambhir decided to step down as skipper and Shreyas Iyer became the new captain.

Ajinkya Rahane, the skipper of Rajasthan Royals has thrown his weight around the former Delhi skipper and believes that he is not the reason for Delhi’s dismal show.

Commendable decision

Rahane lauded the efforts of the veteran southpaw for taking the responsibility for team’s underwhelming performances, calling his decision to relinquish captaincy as “commendable”. It is natural for a player to go through ups and downs. One cannot remain at the top all the time and keep performing throughout the tournament. Gambhir has failed to deliver good starts to the side which is one of the reasons for team’s poor show.

As the team is languishing at the bottom of the table, it must make full use of transfer window and fill the void. The franchise cannot afford to lose more games from now on as a couple more losses will rule them out of the playoffs race. Shreyas Iyer has a big task on his hands as he is expected to end the losing streak and start the winning momentum right from word go.
