Rajasthan Royals (RR) continued their winning momentum with a resounding win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. While Jos Buttler was the main architect of the victory once again who scored his fifth consecutive half-century, the bowlers also did their job perfectly to restrict the hosts to a below-par total. However, their skipper Ajinkya Rahane was fined for maintaining the slow over-rate after opting to field first.
It was the incisive bowling of the Royals which had kept the Mumbai batsmen on their toes throughout the innings. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes stepped up to the task and were the chief tormentors for the opposition. They were threatening to post a total beyond Royals’ reach at the halfway stage but Rahane and Co. pulled things back stunningly and then batted brilliantly to end the straightforward qualification hopes of the defending champions.
IPL Press release confirmed the news
The Indian Premier League (IPL) released an official statement confirming that Ajinkya Rahane was fined for Rs 12 Lakhs being the skipper of the team. “As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Rahane was fined INR 12 lakh,” the statement read. Virat Kohli was the first captain to be charged this season for failing to maintain the slow over-rate during the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Royals will now face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens on Tuesday and would be eager to continue their winning momentum. They will have to take care now that they don’t commit the slow over-rate offence again and complete their 20 overs within the stipulated time. The team would also have to win their remaining matches in order to qualify for the playoffs.
