The much-awaited player retention took place in Bengaluru on Thursday as the franchises revealed the name of the players they retained. The official broadcaster Star Sports is leaving no stone unturned to make the upcoming edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) a huge event. While Royal Challengers Bangalore surprised everyone by keeping Sarfaraz Khan by their side, Chennai Super Kings went with the expected trio of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja.
These two franchises along with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils have used the maximum amount out of the Rs. 80 Crore purse available for them. But Kings XI Punjab would be the one who will have to build the side during the player auction event as they have retained only Axar Patel. Even Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have to find out a captain as they have gone with the couple of foreign players as far as their retentions are concerned. The franchises also have Right to Match (RTM) cards available with them in case they wish to get back a key player.
KXIP left with a huge amount
Punjab, after retaining only one player, are left with Rs. 67.5 Crore as they have let go of the players like Hashim Amla, David Miller and Glenn Maxwell. The similar amount is left with Rajasthan Royals who unfortunately didn’t have many players to retain by their side. Though they went only with Steve Smith who will surely be the captain of the side. They will, however, look to use RTM for the class Indian player Ajinkya Rahane. The smartest retentions though were made by Sunrisers who are still having Rs. 59 Crore after retaining a couple of match winners.
Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi are already deprived of a lot of purse after deciding to retain all the three players and will have only a couple of RTMs with them to use. Though RCB possesses a little bit more amount than the others as they retained the uncapped Sarfaraz for just Rs. 3 Crore. They also paid a whopping Rs. 17 Crore to Virat Kohli who has now become the costliest player ever in IPL. It will be interesting to see the way the franchises strategise for the upcoming auction which is going to be a huge event.
Here’s the purse left with all the teams:
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – Rs 47 crore
Delhi Daredevils (DD) – Rs 47 crore
