Through the ten important historical years of the Indian Premier League (IPL) many Indian local cricketers as well the overseas players have gained a lot of recognition and exposure. There have been many such players who were picked up by their national teams after making a mark in the IPL. That is the real objective of the tournament to be a platform for the lesser known names to take the stage and grab the opportunity.

Under 19 boys will remain in focus: Kumble

Former Indian captain Anil Kumble mentioned in a discussion that the Under-19 recruits who have been picked up by the respective franchises for the upcoming season will be in focus among the other cricketers. Quite a few cricketers who featured in the Indian team in the recently concluded winning World Cup campaign in New Zealand were picked up this year by the IPL franchises.

The Under 19 team skipper Prithvi Shaw will be featuring in the Delhi Daredevils roster, the highest scorer of the tournament Shubman Gill with the fast bowling duo Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi were bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders team to exhibit their respective talents.

Kumble believes that this is a great opportunity for these young cricketers to grab the limelight through their performance in the debut season.

“The U19 boys will certainly be in focus, you have Prithvi Shaw, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, these guys will certainly be in focus. It will be a big opportunity for these young players to showcase their talent on a big stage,” said Kumble during a discussion at the Star Sports Select Dugout event.

The former Indian cricketer also cited the examples of Mumbai Indians‘ players, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya who gained recognition through great performances in the IPL and then both of them established their spot in the Indian team. After some remarkable performances in limited overs cricket, Hardik and Bumrah have now entered the Indian setup in the team for the longest format of the game.

“Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, all of them have come through the IPL and really done well. It’s an opportunity for everyone,” further added the former Indian cricketer.
