The IPL 2018 auctions has been ruling all the major headlines of the day. It is worth noting that this particular IPL auctions has been a pretty unusual one thus far. A lot of surprises have sprung up in terms of the kinds of players the teams are looking up to. The young colts, even 16-year olds are fetching big deals. On the other hand, the big veterans are missing out. Delhi Daredevils head coach Ricky Ponting threw light on the very same subject recently.

Ricky Ponting has had a close association with the Indian Premier League for a long time now. He represented the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Mumbai Indians in the capacity of an overseas players. Later, he also led the Mumbai franchise. Soon, he found himself in the capacity of the mentor and the coach of the Mumbai camp. And now, this year, he has struck a deal with the Delhi Daredevils.

At the Delhi camp, Ponting is helping the management in churning out the best of talents for their team. Amidst all the talks about the players and the big money they are making, Ponting took his time out to explain the strange complications of the auctions. As per the quotes in the Mumbai Mirror, Ricky Ponting reasoned out why the franchises are looking for youngsters.

Changing dynamics of the game

He noted that the game of cricket is evolving and it requires frequent changes on the field. It is always easier for the younger players to adapt to these changes compared to the elder ones who have been habituated to one particular kind of playing methodology.

“This game is getting increasingly difficult to play. Younger players are picking up skills a lot earlier. Young Indians are getting to learn early. As an older player it’s tough to improve. You can maintain, but you’re on a steady decline. That might be the major reason,” Ricky Ponting reasoned out.

This, arguably, sounds like the most perfect reason why the likes of Lasith Malinga, Chris Gayle, and Murali Vijay found no takers. On the other hand, players of India U19 team have fetched mega deals- be it Shivam Mavi or Kamlesh Nagarkoti.
