The 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League is all set to get underway. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is leaving no stone unturned in their attempt to make this tournament a big hit. However, prior to the commencement of the series, the board has received a legal notice about the tournament. The Madras High Court has issued the notice to the board.
The Madras High Court has sent the legal notices to the BCCI writing about the betting concerns surrounded with the tournament. The notices were sent after the hearing took place for a petition that was filed at court to postpone the IPL 2018 until the board assured good preventive measures to curb betting and spot fixing.
Spot fixing and betting are two major concerns for any cricketing tournament and IPL is no different. Over the years, there have been cases of spot fixing and betting being reported by the officials. As per the reports in the IBTimes, Indian Police Service officer Sampathkumar, who was involved in the investigations into the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, alleged in his public interest litigation filing that “vested interests still continue to be protected in the IPL” and that “questions of conflict of interest remain unaddressed” by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
No preventive measures in place
The first hearing for the case took place at the Madras High Court on April 4. Back in the year 2013, three players of the Rajasthan Royals, including S Sreesanth, were caught in the spot fixing scandal. Following the confirmation of the involvement of these cricketers in spot fixing, the BCCI banned them for life.
Also, the owners of the Chennai Super King found themselves having links with the bookies. Owing to these concerns, Sampathkumar has alleged that the BCCI does not have a strong system to curb such cases. Hence, he wants the tournament to be postponed until preventive measures are in place.
