IPL 2018: CSK not to implement Yo-Yo fitness test in its setup
Fleming also gave a brief insight on the opening combinations available to them this season.
The Yo-Yo fitness test has become a regular feature of the Indian team ever since Virat Kohli has taken over the reigns of the Indian cricket. Even his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has made it mandatory now with Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab also implementing it. The fitness of the players is of the utmost importance these days and it will matter in the tournament brief
CSK is marking their return to the Indian T20 extravaganza this year along with Rajasthan Royals who were suspended for a period of two years. There is a lot of buzz around the team as it possesses the highest fan base in the tournament. Also, MS Dhoni will return to leading the side this year and will be at the helm after almost 18 months as he resigned as India captain last year in January.
Personal fitness is important
The coach of CSK, Stephen Fleming, cleared that they will not implement Yo-Yo fitness test and they have other things to concentrate on. “The Yo-Yo test? No. It’s very much personal fitness here. We have enough to do to control the players’ fitness. There are professionals who do their job, so that’s not the focus of the side,” he said.
“There is other stuff to concentrate on, in terms of the skill-sets and roles. We have Gregory King from South Africa who is an outstanding trainer and the facilities that we use are top draw. We don’t try and up the ante or drop it down,” Fleming was quoted as saying by Sportstar on the sidelines of CSK’s training session on Monday. He also gave a brief insight on the opening combinations available for them this season.
“We are not sure yet. It depends on the overall condition that we decide on. Faf du Plessis can open, Shane Watson is there, Rayudu (Ambati) can open, Sam Billings can open, Vijay (Murali) can open, Dhruv Shorey, can also open,” revealed Fleming, adding, “Some of them may have played in the middle-order, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t open. They may be better suited for opening,” Fleming added.
