The Delhi Daredevils (DD) have recently been eliminated from the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They have had a forgettable season having won only three out of their 12 games thus far in the cash-rich tournament. They started the event with a defeat against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and their campaign has gone downhill thereafter.
Following a string of drubbings, Gautam Gambhir resigned as the skipper of the franchise and Shreyas Iyer was appointed as the new captain. The move changed the face of the brand of cricket they displayed on the cricket pitch. Prithvi Shaw replaced Gambhir at the top of the order and the 18-year old cricketer fired on all cylinders and impressed one and all.
The shambolic show by the Daredevils
Moreover, Iyer and Rishabh Pant racked up runs in the middle order and that helped the franchise to rack up massive scores on the board. However, despite their stupendous performances, Delhi were unable to garner adequate victories under their belt. Against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), they found themselves in a must-win situation, but their batsmen faltered.
Pant played a masterful hand of 128 runs off 63 balls, which helped the team to a competitive score. To DD’s agony, the bowlers leaked runs at an alarming rate, which didn’t help their cause of putting a lid on the batsmen. Subsequently, they lost by nine wickets and had to face the wrath of elimination. Even in their last match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), they slumped to defeat by five wickets.
The likes of Sandeep Lamichhane and Abhishek Sharma, who made their debut in the IPL, played exceedingly well. Pant also carried forward his form from the previous match. Nevertheless, the bowlers faltered yet another time as Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers rocked them yet another time. Following the defeat. Hemant Dua, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Daredevils dropped some heartfelt messages for the franchise and its supporters.
