IPL 2018: Doordarshan to telecast one game per week
Star India boasts of a whopping 60 percent of cricket coverage across the globe.
Star India has been grabbing the headlines when it comes to the broadcasting of games in India. Sony telecasted the games of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for ten straight seasons. However, Star bought the rights for 16347 crores for the next five seasons. Meanwhile, the media house has also managed to win the rights for bilateral series in India for a massive 6148 crores.
Meanwhile, Star India is all set to air the eleventh season of the IPL which begins tomorrow. However, most recently, they have allowed Doordarshan, a broadcaster under the Government of India, to broadcast one game of the IPL in a week with a one-hour delay on games on Sunday as per reports in Biz Asia. Uday Shankar, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Star India update about the same to the media.
“Comfortable with this”- CEO of Star India
“It’s only one match per week and on a Sunday with a one-hour delay. It’s not like international cricket that has to be shared withthe national broadcaster. We are comfortable with this and that’s why we have gone ahead. It only helps the IPL if it reaches people that don’t have access to Pay TV,” Shankar mentioned.
Also, Star India boasts of a whopping 60 percent of cricket coverage across the globe, which includes tournaments like the ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC World T20, the IPL and the Asia Cup. Cricket in India will also be broadcasted in Star Sports. For the time being, it will be interesting to see their tactics for the eleventh edition of the T20 league.
The opening match of the upcoming edition of the IPL will be played between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. There will be an opening ceremony after which the match will take place.
