2. Third umpire adjudging Hardik Pandya ‘not out’ in spite of UltraEdge spike
Technical advancements in the game have ensured on several occasions that wrong decisions are successfully recognised and rectified. However, the decision of the third umpire to overturn a decision in Hardik Pandya’s favour in the match between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) stirred up quite a storm.
Towards the fag end of the high-scoring match’s first innings, Chris Woakes had been able to invoke a dismissal from the on-field umpire against Hardik Pandya, who’s known for his hard-hitting skills in the final overs. Pandya chose to refer the decision and in spite of a distinct murmur on UltraEdge at the instant of the ball passing the bat, the third umpire chose to adjudge Pandya not out.
Gifted with a life by the controversial decision, the fiery batsman went on to hit consecutive sixes in the following two deliveries and helped his skipper Rohit Sharma, to take MI to a mammoth total of 213 runs. The decision left the entire RCB team and management fuming, as they ended up on the losing side by a margin of 46 runs.
