IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir urges fans to cheer for Delhi Daredevils

Gautam Gambhir raked up a nation-wide debate in recent times when he chose to step down as the captain of the Delhi Daredevils (DD). After a string of defeats, DD came right back into the tournament recently with a 55-run victory. On Monday (April 30), Gambhir urged fans to back their side and cheer for them in a tweet.

Delhi Daredevils are currently at the bottom-most rung of the points ladder, with 2 wins to their name in 8 matches. Although the chances for them to qualify for the playoffs appear to be slim, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all about unpredictability. Considering DD have 7 matches left to play, consecutive wins in the next few matches can very well see them on course to the next stage of the league.

Gambhir tweeted a snap of himself, clad in the blue-red DD jersey with a bat hoisted on his shoulders. The caption echoed the stylish batsman’s positive spirit as it said that the road for the team is “not over till it’s over”. Gambhir ended the tweet by asking the fans to stand by their team as Delhi takes on the mighty Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Pune on Monday evening, hinting towards a possible comeback into the Playing XI.

Gambhir’s decision to step down as the DD captain came as a shock when he declared his decision on April 25. Owing to a lack of form and consecutive poor knocks, the 36-year-old clarified his decision to have been free from an outside pressure or influence, calling it his personal choice. The captaincy reins were subsequently handed to young Shreyas Iyer, who took his team to a dazzling victory in his very first match as skipper.

Interestingly, after Gambhir stepped down from the leadership role, he was benched for the following match where Iyer hit a sensational 40-ball 90 runs to guide his team to victory against a hapless Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side. Gambhir had previously captained the KKR to two title victories and had expressed his desire to play for his home side for his last season of the tournament, and was subsequently drafted into the DD team.
