In the Wednesday match against the Chennai Super Kings, Indian batsman Mandeep Singh played a fine knock of 32 from 17 balls that helped take the score of Royal Challengers Bangalore to 205. In the short but breezy innings, Mandeep played some uncommon shots improvised on the field, as we often see in the Indian Premier League. On Saturday, he shared a snapshot of one his shots from the evening on his twitter account for a laugh.
He uploaded a picture of him playing a reverse sweep shot with legs outstretched and compared it to the batting style of Arjan – the iconic character from the movie Lagaan. He went on to caption the picture “close enough”. Catch a glimpse of the tweet below.

Arjan was among the most intriguing and loved characters of Ashutosh Gowariker’s legendary sports-meets-drama periodic piece starring Aamir Khan. Set during the British era, the movie revolves around a team of villagers learning to play cricket for the first time and defeating the British men at their own game to win freedom from taxes. It is one of the most beloved and emotional Bollywood movies of the 2000s.
If the internet and social media were as popular in 2001 as it is today, then Arjan’s unique ‘back-shot’ would have been the subject of many trolls and memes. But Mandeep brought it up anyway after so many years in a manner of humour.
Mandeep – one of RCB’s most valuable assets
However, Mandeep’s team is having none of the success that Aamir Khan’s team of villagers had in the movie against the British officers. RCB right now is stranded in the bottom half of the IPL league table, with only 2 wins from 6 matches and a negative net run rate.
With world class batsmen like AB de Villiers, captain Virat Kohli himself and some other popular names from the young Indian brigade like Mandeep, RCB’s performance this year has really been below par. Mandeep has so far played all the 6 matches for RCB this year and has scored 171 runs at a strike rate of 167.64.
But even when their impressive batting line-up managed to put up totals like 205 in the match against CSK, it is the performance of their bowlers that had let them down time and again.
RCB goes up against the Kolkata Knight Riders next in a Sunday match at their home ground Chinnaswamy.
