IPL 2018: Match 9, Player Battles – Jasprit Bumrah vs Rishabh Pant and Glenn Maxwell

Jasprit Bumrah had a mixed start to his IPL 2018 campaign as his final overs impacted towards the results of Mumbai Indians’ first two matches where they lost by 1-wicket margins. In the season opener, Bumrah was taken for 20 runs in the 19th over by Dwayne Bravo with three sixes to bring down the equation to seven from the final over. In their second game, Bumrah dismissed Yusuf Pathan and Rashid Khan in consecutive deliveries as he turned the game towards MI when SRH was cruising to a win with 12 runs needed from 15 balls.

Bumrah will have a crucial role to play in their 3rd game against Delhi Daredevils to help his team to open their account on the points table. In their home fixture, Mumbai Indians will be up against the Delhi franchise filled with the big hitters like Colin Munro, Glenn Maxwell, Rishabh Pant and Chris Morris. While the young Mayank Markande ran through CSK and SRH batting line-ups, MI’s pace attack couldn’t make any difference by producing breakthroughs at the start. Jasprit Bumrah and Mustafizur Rahman did a great job in the previous game which is needed consistently for MI who are missing the 3rd seamer.

The MI’s spearhead Bumrah will be key in causing troubles to the DD batting. The Indian pacer had Rishabh Pant and Glenn Maxwell on three occasions already in the IPL. MS Dhoni is the only other player whom Bumrah dismissed three times in the IPL so far. Maxwell scored 25 runs against Bumrah in the 21 balls he faced at an average of 8.33 while Pant averages only ‘1’ run against India’s premier death overs bowler.

Bumrah and Umesh Yadav are the only pacers who have got Maxwell three times in the IPL. The leg-spinners Amit Mishra (4) and Piyush Chawla (3) also have dismissed Maxwell often in the league. The Australian hit four boundaries off Bumrah and has a dot balls percentage of 42.86. Maxwell has a higher dot balls % only against Sunil Narine (44.12) in the IPL.
