The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) beating the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Grand Finale of the tournament. The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was a witness to a masterclass by MS Dhoni’s men where they dictated terms to the opponents. They also became the second team in the IPL to win three titles after Mumbai Indians (MI).
Dhoni won the toss and elected to field first, bearing in mind their batting-strength and the impact of dew in the latter stages of the encounter. They restricted the Sunrisers to 178 runs in 20 overs. The Yellow Army picked up wickets at regular intervals and didn’t let the batsmen take advantage of a pitch, which didn’t have much for the bowlers.
Third title in CSK’s kitty
The likes of Lungi Ngidi and Deepak Chahar and Lungi Ngidi were again brilliant and churned out frugal spells. Shardul Thakur was entrusted to bowl the last over in front of Carlos Brathwaite. However, he didn’t let his team down and seared in the Yorkers with perfection. During the run chase, CSK didn’t race away and played out Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s initial overs.
Shane Watson, initially, strained to find his timing and took eleven balls to open his account. Nevertheless, following his slow start, he took the bowlers to the cleaners. The Queenslander smoked Sandeep Sharma for 27 runs in the 13th over and brought the match in CSK’s favour. He accomplished his fifty in 33 balls and then took 51 balls to notch his second hundred of this season’s IPL.
Also, he became the second player after Wriddhiman Saha to score a century in an IPL final. After the victory, the players celebrated inside the team bus. The official Facebook page went live where every player and support staff was seen having a gala time.
