The Mumbai Indians had a great time at the IPL 2018 auctions. They have managed to scale up a very powerful looking squad on paper. With a plethora of big names on the roster, the defending champions seem to have hit their straps right ahead of the 2018 edition of the tournament. The MI camp will be happy with their signings and hope to recreate the magic of 2017 yet again in 2018.
Coming to the tournament history, Mumbai Indians have often been the slow starters or the late bloomers. They have the habit of losing games in the initial phase. But once they get act sorted, they are a formidable side under Rohit Sharma. At the auctions, they have ticked all boxes correct. However, they are bound to find themselves in the same old situation of ‘problem of excess’. Selection conundrums will soar high for the defending champions.
Retention
In the player retentions, the Mumbai camp had retained the services of their captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit has been a perennial performer for the side and an able leader. They also retained the services of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has been a good contributor with both bat and the ball. The third player that the MI camp retained was bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is tipped as one of the better death overs bowlers in world cricket.
Most recognizable players bought
Mumbai Indians shelled out a whopping INR 8.8 crores to get their RTM in picture for all-rounder Krunal Pandya. Krunal became the highest paid uncapped cricketer at the IPL auctions. Surprisingly enough, MI gave away INR 6.2 crore for young Ishan Kishan. Among the overseas lot, the MI team used their RTM to save Kieron Pollard for INR 5.4 crore. Mumbai camp also shelled out big money on Pat Cummins (INR 5.4 crore) and Windies hot property Evin Lewis (INR 3.8 crore).
Batsmen
Mumbai Indians made a very good selection in Evin Lewis. Lewis has been in a phenomenal form and has two T20I centuries against India as well. Also, the local flavor has been added to the group by signing up Suryakumar Yadav. Saurabh Tiwary is back to the Mumbai camp.
All-rounders
South African all-rounder JP Duminy is all set to be back in the Mumbai Indian roster. He will accompany the plethora of other all-rounders at the camp. Krunal Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Ben Cutting have all been major signings for the Mumbai camp. Young Anukul Roy has fetched a deal with the defending champions as well.
Wicket-keepers
It will be interesting to see which wicketkeeper batsman the Mumbai team goes forward with. They have shelled out big money for young Ishan Kishan. But they also have the experienced campaigner Aditya Tare in their side. Tare has played for MI team previously as well.
Bowlers
The MI camp have surprisingly not opted to go ahead with Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, and Mitchell McClenaghan. In their absence, it seems that Pat Cummins could be the spearhead for the side. Also, there is a big signing of Bangladeshi pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman. Among the Indian lot, Rahul Chahar and Pradeep Sangwan have bagged big deals.
