The five players MI shouldn’t retain are Lendl Simmons, Tim Southee, Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga.

Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga have been a part of the Mumbai Indians lineup since the first season and enjoyed a lot of glory over the years. However, it will not be a wise decision to extend their journey with the franchise beyond the last season considering their recent serious injuries due to age and lack of active cricketing action.

Harbhajan has not been involved in prime action for some time now. He managed to swoop just 8 wickets in 11 matches while Malinga bagged 11 wickets in 12 games at a high economy rate of 8.52 last season.

Simmons and Southee failed to deliver performances deserving a retention during the last edition of the IPL while the serious talent available amongst the domestic batsmen makes retaining Rayudu an incorrect decision. The West Indian managed to score only 137 runs in 7 matches last season while Southee merely picked 3 wickets in 3 games. Rayudu was a poor performer last season managing to put up just 91 runs in 5 games.
