IPL 2018: Sunil Gavaskar reckons bouncy pitches as problematic for Indian batsmen
Gavaskar also believes that the shortcoming won’t help them during India’s tour of Australia.
The eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League has been a witness to some riveting encounters. A number of matches have gone right down to the wire and have kept the audience at the edge of their seats. The pitches dished out by the curators throughout the tournament have also been phenomenal as they have had something for everyone.
While batsmen played their strokes freely, the spinners and pacers have extracted a fair amount of bounce and turn from the pitches. Sunil Gavaskar, the former cricketer, hailed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for serving the sporting wickets.
Gavaskar’s concern for Indian batsmen
“The pitches for this IPL have been terrific and BCCI needs to be complimented for providing pitches where the ball has not turned from ball one and where it has come on to the bat nicely with a true bounce and where the batsmen can play on the rise without too much worry about sideways movement” Gavaskar wrote in his column for the Times of India (TOI).
Meanwhile, some Indian batsmen have tended to struggle against the significant bounce from the decks, something which has been a concerning factor for their cricket for several years. He also believes that the shortcoming won’t help them during India’s tour of Australia later this year.
“Unfortunately, the extra bounce has also found out some of the Ranji Trophy ‘dadas’ who have floundered against the short ball and with some of them being India prospects, it doesn’t augur well especially for the tour later in the year to Australia where the bounce will be even more,” he added.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will be pitted against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The 68-year old veteran mentioned that Kane Williamson’s men will want to get back their winning momentum and praised RCB for getting their act in place under Virat Kohli.
