The Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli has made it a habit to be in the record books. He is renowned for shattering records in international cricket and is now defining new standards in the IPL as well. Recently, he played a brilliant knock of unbeaten 92 in a fixture against the Mumbai Indians in Mumbai. Albeit his knock went in vain as RCB crashed out falling short by 46 runs, his efforts saw him breach yet another record.
Virat Kohli became the first cricketer to complete 5,000 runs in T20 format for single team. Currently, Kohli has 5043 runs to his name for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He has been associated with the franchise ever since the first edition of the popular T20 league. He has represented the RCB camp in the IPL and in the Champions League T20 as well.
Earlier in the same innings against the Mumbai Indians, Kohli had also become the leading run getter in the history of the IPL. When he took his 33rd run in the match, he surpassed the previous leading run scorer in the competition, Suresh Raina. Raina has accumulated 4558 runs in the tournament.
Virat has also scored 424 runs for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Champions League T20, hence, taking his overall tally to the 5000 mark. Other numbers from the same innings are that it was his 34th fifty whilst playing for the RCB.
Efforts in vain
Albeit he shattered the record books, he failed to take his team over the line. He drew praises from his coach, Daniel Vettori, after the game though. Kohli was not at fault in the run chase at all. He kept the scorecard ticking and finished with an unbeaten 92. But the fact that he found no support from the other end diminished the chances of RCB in the match. They were chasing 213 in the game, and could only muster 167/8 in the stipulated 20 overs. This was the third defeat of the season for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
