Not even the legendary Indian all-rounder Vinoo Mankad had thought that his innocent act of running out Bill Brown, who was backing up too far, in the 1947 India’s tour to Australia; will have such a long-lasting ramification.

There have been a big discussion over this mode of dismissal, which is popularly known as ‘Mankad’ after Ravi Ashwin dismissed Jos Buttler in such a way during the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab clash in the IPL 2019. Ashwin copped a lot of flak for his actions, as he didn’t warn Buttler before committing the deed and then seemingly waited for Buttler to move out of his crease before running him out.

Aakash Chopra asks more and more bowlers to Mankad batsmen

Former India Test opener Aakash Chopra, who is commentating in Hindi in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2019 has called for more and more bowlers to Mankad batsmen. Ashwin mankading Buttler sparked a debate about the spirit of sportsmanship as a part of the public and experts said that Ashwin was in his rights to dismiss Buttler who was seemingly taking undue advantage.

On the other hand, the other half slammed Ashwin for not warning Buttler (which is not required by the law) and seemingly pausing his in bowling stride and waiting for him to move out of the crease in a normal way before mankading him. Chopra cited an example of Wednesday’s match between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders and shared a picture of the match in which KXIP’s Mayank Agarwal was well out of his crease when Andre Russell was about to deliver the ball.

Chopra then wrote that it was a lost chance for the bowler to take benefit as he said the latter should make sure the pitch remains a 22-yard track and not decrease to 20 yards. Aakash Chopra tweeted, “Missed Opportunity….more bowlers need to start running batsmen out at the non-striker’s end. It’s a 22-yard pitch…don’t let them make it 20 yards.”
