The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lived to fight another day by defeating the Kings XI Punjab in Mohali on Friday. It was a must-win game for both the teams and a loss would’ve ended KKR’s ended campaign. The chances of the same happening increased after Sam Curran powered KXIP to 183 while batting first. But the visitors chased down the total superbly with two overs to spare and stayed alive in the tournament. Dinesh Karthik, the KKR skipper, was all smiles after the match and was happy after the victory.

But things weren’t the same on the field for him. KKR, after picking Chris Gayle and KL Rahul, lost their way completely and some lacklustre fielding coupled with ordinary bowling led to the Karthik losing his cool. The captain was animated during the whole duration on the field and didn’t even back out when he had to give an earful to his teammates during the break.

In one of the strategic time-outs, Dinesh Karthik was seen having an animated discussion with the players to bring the best out of them. He might have pointed out their mistakes on the field and was seen making gestures as well.

Karthik explains the situation

The chat though helped his team get back into the groove as the bowlers scalped key wickets to keep the opposition quiet. Also, the chase was thoroughly clinical with Chris Lynn and Shubman Gill providing the team with a brilliant start and the latter went on to remain unbeaten till the end. Karthik himself came out to calm things down after Andre Russell‘s wicket and slammed 21 off 9 balls to seal the game in the 18th over.

After the match, when he was asked about being animated on the field, Karthik cleared that he wasn’t pleased with his teammates with their attitude on the field and he let them know of the same. “I wasn’t too happy with the what the bowlers and the fielders were doing, so I thought I should let the boys know what I felt at that time. It is rare, not many people have seen me angry. If I feel I need to be angry to get the best out of the boys, then maybe,” he said.
