The quality of umpiring in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has come under the scanner. In the game between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, on-field umpire S Ravi failed to spot a no-ball in the final delivery of the encounter, bowled by veteran speedster Lasith Malinga.

Later, after seeing the replays, skippers of both the teams, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, lashed out at the umpires for the horrendous mistake during the crunch moment of the game. Another such came to the fore in Kings XI Punjab’s (KXIP) home match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. The umpire gave Colin Ingram Out off the bowling of pacer Hardus Viljoen.

However, after the left-handed batsman took the Decision Review System (DRS), replays displayed that the leather had pitched way outside the leg-stump. Subsequently, the on-field decision had to be overturned and Ingram got a much-needed lifeline at a crucial stage of the contest.

There has been no communication or intimation

In the meantime, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its concerns over the quality of umpiring. An official of the world’s richest cricket board didn’t mince any words in saying that despite warnings, nothing much has been done regarding the umpires’ examination.

“This is a serious concern which is being raised by all parties, but specifically with regards to the manner in which selection of umpires is being done. Serious questions being raised again and again is not healthy,” the official was quoted as saying in Outlook.

“Of late, every issue under the sun is being looked at through the prism of conflict of interest. But it surprises me that despite the repeated warnings there has been no communication or intimation about the steps being taken to deal with it with regard to the umpires’ examinations.”

“If what is being claimed is true – person setting the paper is also running an academy to train individuals – then you are opening the BCCI to serious ridicule and severely compromising the quality of individuals who can be groomed to be international umpires. People with talent are in that case facing the highest degree of unfairness if an undeserving candidate already knows the content of the question paper.”
