IPL 2019: BCCI discontinues ICC’S Anti-Corruption Unit’s services
Financial issue was the reason behind the move.
The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is scheduled to start on Saturday, March 23 with the contest between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. However, the schedule only for the first two weeks has been announced, subject to the announcement of Lok Sabha 2019 election dates.
In the meantime, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to ditch the services of International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti Corruption Unit for the upcoming edition of the cash-rich T20 tournament. The world’s richest cricket board had to shell out close to INR 3.1 crore in the previous IPL and financial issue is the reason behind the BCCI’s decision for the move.
Why should we hire other people?- Rai
The BCCI has now decided to set up its own ACU for the next IPL. Vinod Rai, the chairman of Supreme Court-appointed BCCI’s Committee of Administrators, was pretty clear about the move.
“We have decided to discontinue ICC ACSU wing from this season onwards. We have been hiring ICC’s ACSU services for the past ten years now. Why should we not hire our own people?” Rai was quoted as saying in the Indian Express.
“There was no logic, because we are paying 10 per cent (to India ACU officer) of what we are paying to them (ICC ACSU). Why should we not hire our own people, why should we hire other people?” he added.
As far as the tournament is concerned, the rest of the schedule is yet to be announced and also with the World Cup, starting on May 30, it will be interesting to see how the board adjusts the schedule for the T20 games.
Back in 2018, the Super Kings beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), captained by Kane Williamson, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to win the championship for the third time.
