Despite heroics from Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) captain Dinesh Karthik and their spinners Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav, Rajasthan Royals (RR) managed to pull off a comfortable win at Eden Gardens. Karthik scored his IPL and T20 best of unbeaten 97, while Chawla picked three wickets, first by a KKR spinner in IPL 2019.
However, it was overshadowed earlier in their innings by Varun Aaron, who dismantled the KKR top order with two wickets, including that of Chris Lynn for a duck and then trapped young gun Shubman Gill for 14, to put the home team on backfoot. Aaron had played just one match before this, bowled one over, gave 16 runs and was benched. This time, however, he was named Man of the Match and the pacer from Jharkhand has now rekindled hopes of regaining his place in the Indian team.
Want to play for the country again, says Aaron
Aaron’s last appearance in Blue jersey came against Sri Lanka in 2014 in Cuttack. He has played 9 Tests and 9 ODIs picking a total of 29 wickets, having made his India debut in 2011. “Everything is fine. It was just cramped which got resolved in half an hour. I always believe in myself. I felt that the one over which I bowled in the previous game, didn’t do much wrong in that. Feeling great, as good as ever. Want to play for my country and win matches.” Varun was quoted as saying in the post-match presentation by Timesnownews.
The 17-year-old Parag (47) and Jofra Archer (27 not out) helped Rajasthan Royals to score a 46-run off the last 4 overs and won the match against Kolkata Knight Riders with four balls to spare. Varun’s 2/20 came in handy as he was the breakthrough man for the Smith’s clan.
Royals will next host Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 45th match of the IPL 2019 and then will play Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 30 in at M Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru.
