IPL 2019: CSK release English speedster Mark Wood
He played only one match last season.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after making a comeback following the two-year suspension owing to their involvement in match-fixing and other unwanted scandals. The MS Dhoni-captained franchise is among the most popular in the championship and they emerged victorious last time around for the third time.
The Yellow Army thumped Kane Williamson’s Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In the meantime, it has been learned that they released Mark Wood, the English right-arm fast bowler, and a couple of uncapped stars- Kaniskh Seth and Kshitiz Sharma- from their 25-member squad as per reports in CSK’s official website.
Willey and Billings retain their place
Wood was picked up by the Super Kings at his base price of INR 1.50 crores, but he ended up playing only one match against the Mumbai Indians (MI), captained by Rohit Sharma. He went for 49 runs in his quota of four overs and couldn’t pick up a wicket. The seamer left the T20 tournament midway and went to represent his county Durham at the first-class level.
Apart from Wood, CSK also drafted in Sam Billings and English all-rounder David Willey for the erstwhile edition. While the former was picked up at his base price of INR 1 crore, Willey was roped in as a replacement of Kedar Jadhav, who injured his hamstring after the opening encounter itself. Nevertheless, the franchise has decided to retain the core of the team.
“We have really valued experience. MS (Dhoni) and I are on the same wavelength that experience count. We have a multi-skilled team in our ranks… that, to us, is very important as it gives us options throughout the course of the season. Around the world, the experienced players have always been consistent,” head coach Stephen Fleming had mentioned after the 2018 IPL auction.
