The Delhi Capitals previously known as Delhi Daredevils went into the IPL 2019 auction with a lot to accomplish. The franchise didn’t get favourable results last time despite bringing in a successful captain in Gautam Gambhir. Things have changed drastically since and Gambhir is no longer a part of the setup, in fact, he has even retired from professional cricket. The man with the responsibility of leading the side is Shreyas Iyer.
In the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant, they have two dynamic and killer batsmen who have proved their abilities against the best in the world. The fact that both of them made their Test debuts for India between the two seasons prove how well their career has been progressing. Another promising young name in their line-up is right-arm pacer Avesh Khan who has been on a roll in almost every series and tournament he has featured.
The was in need of another 10 players and they decided to pick just seven filling these slots with six Indian names and one overseas player.
Delhi open the account
Delhi Capitals were the first to open the account on the day as they picked India’s Test No.6 Hanuma Vihari for Rs 2 crore and then went on to grab the services of Axar Patel and Ishant Sharma as well. To get hold of the all-rounder, Patel they had to get into a bid war with his previous franchise Kings XI Punjab who only gave up when the price went up to Rs 5 crore; that’s where DC got him.
Ishant is a valuable and economical pick for them as the experienced Indian pacer will play for them for Rs 1.1 crore. He is a Delhi boy and will be able to lead their pace attack that has young names like Avesh among other overseas players.
South African, Colin Ingram was the only foreign recruit they paid for in this auction and he certainly is a top quality player in this format. Over the last couple of years, Ingram has featured in most T20 leagues and has emerged as a real performer. To get hold of him DC was willing to shell out Rs 6.4 crore, which made him their most expensive pick in this auction.
The other purchases they made are uncapped Indian players – Ankush Bains, Nathu Singh and Bandaru Ayyappa all at their base price of Rs 20 lakhs.
