The Royal Challengers Bangalore side has been one of the most talked about sides before the start of IPL 2019. After the disappointments of IPL 2017 and IPL 2018, the team management of RCB and captain Virat Kohli had hoped for a new dawn in 2019 edition of the Indian T20 league.
However, it was not to be, as RCB was routed for 70 runs in the tournament opener against CSK and then were outplayed by Mumbai Indians despite the umpiring error which took all the limelight away from RCB’s bowling performance. Their fast bowling contingent has been their kryptonite since the last two years and their team must have the worse death overs bowling performances in recent times.
Kris Srikkanth feels lack of all-rounders is hurting Kohli’s team
Former India captain Kris Srikkanth feels that Kohli led RCB team doesn’t have the right balance to succeed in the IPL 2019. According to him, the team relies solely on the brilliance of Kohli and AB de Villiers.
“The ingredient to a successful campaign is a well-balanced outfit and less dependence on a particular player. RCB have been struggling over the years and it’s no secret that barring Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, the others have not really turned in the performances that one expects at this level. Opponents also believe that once they see the back of this duo there is little chance left for RCB,” Srikkanth wrote in his column for Times of India.
Srikkanth also pointed out that the Bengaluru based franchise was hurting most due to lack of genuine all-rounders in the ranks. Moeen Ali and Colin de Grandhomme are the currently available all-rounders for RCB with reinforcements coming in with the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Coulter-Nile joining the side at latter stages of IPL.
“The lack of a genuine all-rounder is also hurting RCB’s chances. Moeen Ali needs time and the backing of the team management to deliver. I am a firm believer in sticking to a combination and if RCB can continue to instill confidence in their players, they should come good. They have the arsenal and it remains to be seen how they tackle SRH,” Srikkanth added.
