IPL 2019: Manoj Tiwary targets Dinesh Karthik for coming out to bat ahead of Shubman Gill

The IPL 2019 is being seen as a final chance for some of the players who are hoping for a berth in the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019. Though the BCCI selector in chief MSK Prasad has said that IPL performances won’t count towards selection for the mega event in England, it seems that some players are still auditioning for a spot.

One such position open in the team is at the no.4 spot in the playing XI and the selectors are still trying to find the perfect candidate for it. Some of the foremost contenders for this position are the likes of Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu, and Dinesh Karthik, along with Vijay Shankar. The BCCI is to announce the Indian 15-man squad for World Cup on April 15 in Mumbai.

Tiwary not happy with Karthik batting at five

KKR are playing table toppers CSK at the Eden Gardens and have been on a losing trot lately. After being asked to bat by MS Dhoni, who won the toss, KKR was led by 82 from Chris Lynn and 21 from Nitish Rana. However, Imran Tahir demolished the middle order of KKR batting removing Lynn, Rana, and Uthappa, which saw captain Dinesh Karthik come to bat earlier than expected, in front of Shubman Gill.

This led to Manoj Tiwary, who recently failed a trial for Delhi Capitals and has played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, question the motive behind Karthik promoting himself above Gill, who made his highest IPL score while opening the batting. But KKR decided to open with Sunil Narine, who was dismissed for 2 runs off 7 balls.

Kolkata Knight Riders have stuck with opening with a slogger like Sunil Narine, who made 2 runs in this innings, despite Gill making an impact in his natural position as an opener. Tiwary saw this as Dinesh Karthik grabbing an opportunity for himself to make a point for the no.4 position before the selectors choose the Indian team on April 15 in Mumbai.

Tiwary further tweeted that, “Wen someone has played a classy innings of 65 runs in d previous game, than I as a cricket fan want that player to play higher up d order especially wen d team has lost a game. It’s about providing d platform 4 our domestic players to bat higher order ahead of overseas players”
