The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) registered a resounding victory against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Hyderabad. Powered by twin centuries from David Warner and Jonny Bairstow, the team played some unbelievable cricket. They are the only pair other than Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers to have registered two centuries in the same match.

Jonny Bairstow takes the second-fewest innings to score an IPL century

The Sunrisers Hyderabad were put into bat first in the match. David Warner and Jonny Bairstow were marvellous in this match. Both of them registered spectacular centuries and got the team off to a flyer. In the process, they broke several records as well. Their partnership of 185 runs in the highest opening partnership ever in the history of IPL.

While Bairstow scored a 51-ball century, Warner reached the triple figures in 54 balls. This was his third century while playing in Hyderabad and second for SRH. The team played very few dot balls in the entire innings and took numerous doubles along with the massive sixes. In 20 overs, the team put up a massive 231/2 in 20 overs.

RCB’s top-order falls like a pack of cards

RCB’s performance with the bat in this game was absolutely dreadful. The batsmen failed to apply themselves and went too hard after the bowlers. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who are usually the big game players for RCB, failed to deliver for the team. While the skipper got out for 3 runs, his counterpart was clean bowled for 1 run.

Mohammad Nabi picked four wickets right at the start of the innings and never allowed RCB to recover. After they tumbled early on, Colin de Grandhomme and Prayas Ray Barman built a small partnership to help prevent the embarrassment.

Jonny Bairstow, the Man of the Match, said

Really pleased. Delighted to get off to the start and get a few runs today.

Virat Kohli, the RCB captain, said

One of our worst losses ever. Literally, nothing I can explain. Nothing went right for us from ball 1 until our last wicket fell in the second innings. We were outplayed in all departments by a quality side. They showed that they are a champion side – they were finalists last time and beat us in the final (in 2016). Credit to them (Warner and Bairstow) – we could have tried a few different things, like pace off the ball.

But once those guys got in, they just kept going – you need a few things to go your way, and a few catches fell in between fielders. They were world-class today and they deserve to be on the winning side. We thought about that initially as well – I have done well opening the batting but myself at 3 brings that balance in the side, given that I can bat with AB and put the opposition under pressure.

We just need our players to put up a better challenge up front. There are still 11 games to go. The pitch will be nice in Jaipur against the Royals. We need to bring our A-game, like we did against Mumbai and play with that kind of intensity. If we go through the motions, we need to do the regular basic stuff, and get results our way and start winning games in the tournament – the next game should be that game for us.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the SRH captain, said

Shows how good a spinner he is (Nabi). He was spot on from the first ball. It was a good batting track in the second innings but our bowling was brilliant.
