The Delhi Capitals made a mockery of the run chase that they were in firm control of in Mohali. Playing against the Kings XI Punjab, they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! At one stage, they had 7 wickets in hand with almost a run-a-ball target to overhaul. DC lost their last 7 wickets for just 8 runs and it was perhaps one of the biggest brain-fades in a run chase that one could think of. Taking no credit away from KXIP, it was a phenomenal turnaround victory, a win that they would remember for quite some time.

Coming to the match, the DC skipper Shreyas Iyer surprised quite a few by opting to bowl first in the match. His team was in for another shocker to see Sam Curran open the batting for the Kings. Curran blasted a few shots and did scare the visitors, but Sandeep Lamichhane’s key spell got the Capitals back in the game. For the hosts, Sarfaraz Khan and David Miller got good starts but the untimely dismissals of the two batters in succession put serious brakes in the innings. Owing to a four and a six from Mandeep Singh on the last two balls of the innings, KXIP posted 166/9 in their 20 overs.

In the run chase, the Capitals lost Prithvi Shaw on the very first ball of the innings. But good starts from Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer got them going. Later, Colin Ingram and Rishabh Pant looked like cruising through in the run chase. However, a sudden debacle saw Delhi Capitals slump from 144/3 to 152/10. It was Sam Curran who scalped a hat-trick towards the end to wrap up the innings and the match. KXIP won by 14 runs.

Here are the KXIP Player Ratings for the match:

Sam Curran – 9.5/10

The Kings XI Punjab sprung a surprise when they decided to open with Sam Curran. Chris Gayle had to sit out of the game due to a lat injury and Curran’s arrival as an opener was termed as Narine 2.0 on the social media. The young Turk blasted 3 fours and a six during his short stay at the crease to show some great promise. But his actual contribution came in the fag end of the match. He bowled just one over in his first spell. Later, he bowled the 18th and 20th over and finished with highly impressive figures of 4/11 in 2.2 overs. This included a magnificent hat-trick that cleaned up the DC tail.

KL Rahul – 2/10

KL Rahul played a decent knock in his previous outing for KXIP. However, his poor form with the bat seemed to have come back in this game. He perished in the very second over of the match and certainly did throw it away after getting a decent start. He scored 15 off 11 balls in the match. His inconsistency in recent times is a worrying concern not only for the Kings but for the national setup as well.

Mayank Agarwal – 1/10

Mayank Agarwal has had a great run with the bat in the recent domestic season. He translated his good run of form in the IPL as well. In this particular game though, he was unfortunate to have missed out. He was run out on 6 after having faced 9 deliveries. He would be hoping to come back strong in the coming fixtures.

Sarfaraz Khan – 7/10

Sarfaraz Khan had been quite a good performer for the KXIP camp this season thus far. He arrived at the crease rather earlier than what the team would have liked. He showed the great sense to keep the scorecard ticking and hit an odd boundary every now and then. His 29-ball 39 was filled with 6 timely boundaries. He got out at a time when the team needed him to accelerate a little more.

David Miller – 7.5/10

David Miller was totally out of color for the Kings in the last couple of seasons. This season, he seems to have gotten his flair back. His knack of scoring quick runs for the Kings in the middle overs has come back. He looked very impressive for his 43 in the match that came off 30 deliveries with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Much like Sarfaraz’s dismissal, even his departure came at a very odd time for his team.

Mandeep Singh – 6.5/10

Mandeep Singh arrived at the crease in the 14th over of the innings. He found it very tough to get going initially. He was not middling the ball well enough, and his struggle against Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada in the death overs was quite evident. However, the veteran batter finished on a high by hitting a six and a four on the final two balls of the innings. He finished with an unbeaten 29 to his name.

Hardus Viljoen – 7/10

Hardus Viljoen was promoted ahead of R Ashwin in the batting order. He was expected to club a few but he largely failed and was sent backpacking on 1. With the ball in hand, his preferred trade, he was very good on the day. He finished with figures of 1/22 in the three overs that he bowled and accounted for the wicket of Shreyas Iyer, and also followed it up with a celebration that would make some headlines.

Ravichandran Ashwin – 8/10

One has to credit a major share of the team’s success in this match to skipper R Ashwin. Ashwin’s ploy to keep Sam Curran waiting till the very end worked wonders for the team. Also, the way he shuffled the troops was commendable. On the personal front, Ashwin dismissed Prithvi Shaw on the very first ball of the run chase. Later, he dismissed Shikhar Dhawan too and ran out Chris Morris. He returned with figures of 2/31 in his four overs.

Murugan Ashwin – 2/10

Murugan Ashwin did not have a great role to play in the match. He bowled just a couple of overs and gave away 19 runs as he failed to pick up any wicket. Also, he bowled at a stage when two left-handed batters were at the crease. His fear looked evident as he constantly bowled wrong ‘uns. The leggie should perhaps have tried to be a little more gutsy to fetch high-risk rewards.

Mohammed Shami – 7.5/10

Mohammed Shami was exceptional with the ball in hand. The veteran operator showed great skills in the death overs. He dismissed a well set Rishabh Pant in the 17th over and that triggered the DC collapse. Later, he cleaned up Hanuma Vihari in the penultimate over to pretty much wrap up the run chase. Shami finished with 2/27 in his complete quota of 4 overs.

Mujeeb Rahman – 2/10

Mujeeb Rahman is typically a very miser operator. Today was certainly not his day. While most of the KXIP bowlers found their feet at some stage or the other, Mujeeb struggled big time. He conceded as many as 36 runs in the four overs that he bowled. He had no wickets to show against his name in the wickets column either.
