IPL 2019: Match 18, Chennai Super Kings vs Kings XI Punjab – Lesser Known Stats
Here are the lesser known stats recorded during the CSK’s 3rd consecutive win in Chennai.
The Kings XI Punjab’s run-chase against the Chennai Super Kings was a classic case of wasting the resources in the T20 format. After a double-wicket maiden from Harbhajan Singh, the duo of KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan did their best to get runs at a decent pace. KXIP should at 91/2 after 12 overs and needed another 70 runs at less than nine runs an over. But the next five overs accounted for only 26 runs and none of those five overs yielded more than five for the visitors.
Here are the lesser known stats recorded during the CSK’s 3rd consecutive win in Chennai:
Rahul-Sarfaraz miscalculation:
The 3rd wicket partnership of 110 runs between KL Rahul and Sarfaraz kept Kings XI Punjab alive in the chase but the duo missed out on pacing towards the end costing the game. Their partnership is now the 5th highest for any wicket during an unsuccessful chase in the IPL. Rahul added 111 with Aaron Finch during the last season game against the Mumbai Indians which stands at 4th in this list.
The highest stand in an unsuccessful IPL chase is recorded by Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey for the Sunrisers who added 135 for the 3rd wicket in the last season game against RCB. The opening partnership of 121 between Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa stood at the top of the list until 2017 which they got it against Rajasthan Royals in 2014. The famous 114-run stand between Chirs Gayle and Virat Kohli in the 2016 IPL final against SRH is the 3rd highest partnership in an unsuccessful IPL chase.
Ashwin takes on the home team in Chennai:
Ravichandran Ashwin took the field on Saturday as the visiting team player at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai where he began his career. Prior to his game, he featured in 12 List A matches, 6 first-class fixtures and 42 Twenty20s at this venue. All those games he played were for Tamil Nadu, South Zone, India and Chennai Super Kings who are the home side.
He ended up taking all the three wickets to fall in the CSK innings to finish with figures of 3/23 in his four overs. While the Chennai-born off-spinner stood out for the Kings XI Punjab, it was a Punjab off-spinner who done the trick for the Chennai Super Kings. Harbhajan Singh finished with figures of 2/17 in his four overs and won the player of the match award.
Ashwin edges past Bravo:
In this 43rd Twenty20 match in Chennai, Ravichandran Ashwin picked up his 50th wicket in the format. He became the first player to claim 50 Twenty20 wickets at the Chepauk when Faf du Plessis holed out in his bowling. Dwayne Bravo, who has been ruled out for the few games of CSK, stands at 2nd position with 49 wickets here. Had Bravo played this game and CSK bowled first, the Caribbean player would have the honours of becoming the first player with 50 T20 wickets in Chennai.
