IPL 2019: Match 22, KXIP vs SRH – Kings XI Punjab Player Ratings
KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal guided KXIP home with a 114-run stand.
The Kings XI Punjab pipped the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a low-scoring humdinger in Mohali. At one stage in the game, it seemed like the hosts would ease past the target. But a couple of wickets in the final overs caused mayhem and things went down to the ultimate over of the innings. Mohammad Nabi failed to defend 11 in the final over for his side. And it was a determined KL Rahul who took his team home with an unbeaten fifty to his name.
Earlier in the match, the hosts had won the toss and opted to bowl first. They were successful in removing the in-form Jonny Bairstow early in the match. David Warner and Vijay Shankar then stitched a handy partnership for the second wicket to rebuild the SRH innings after the early dent. After Shankar’s dismissal, the other batters failed to provide support to Warner. Warner rallied along like a lone ranger as wickets kept falling at the other end. Even Warner failed to pick up the pace, although he remained unbeaten. His unbeaten 70 helped SRH post a decent total of 150/4 in 20 overs.
In the run chase, some brilliance in the field saw Chris Gayle depart early. Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul then stitched a handy partnership to keep the run chase ticking. They put KXIP in the commanding position. They dominated the SRH bowlers with utmost ease. However, Sandeep Sharma bowled a magnificent over towards the end to cause some tension in the KXIP dugout. It was a little too late though. Rahul was composed enough to keep his calm and steer his side to a 6 wicket win.
Here are the KXIP Player Ratings for the match:
Chris Gayle – 3/10
The big man Chris Gayle has a love affair with the venue in Mohali. When he walked in to bat in this match, the fans expected a Gayle storm coming their way. This was not to be though. Gayle hit a six and a four before getting dismissed on 16. He was caught on the boundary ropes as he attempted a heave down the ground off the bowling of Rashid Khan.
KL Rahul – 9/10
KL Rahul was the star of the show for KXIP in the match. The opener showed great skill to adapt to the conditions that looked very tricky. Most batters found it tough to bat on this particular wicket, but Rahul’s nonchalance was on display for all to witness. He hit an unbeaten 71 off just 53 balls with 7 fours and a six to his name. In the final over, it was a boundary from Rahul that sealed the game for his side.
Mayank Agarwal – 8.5/10
Mayank Agarwal batted really well in this match. The Karnataka-lad came in to bat in the powerplay after the dismissal of Chris Gayle. He had big boots to fill and he did a great job. He scored a timely 55 off mere 43 deliveries. His innings comprised of 3 fours and as many number of sixes. He added 114 runs for the second wicket with KL Rahul.
David Miller – 1/10
With KL Rahul set at the other end, all David Miller had to do in the run chase was to play the supporting role. The overseas star fell prey to the rush of blood and perished in his attempt to finish things on his own. He was sent packing on 1 that he scored of 3 deliveries. Miller would be disappointed with his approach in the run chase.
Mandeep Singh – 2/10
When Mandeep Singh walked in to bat, the pressure had mounted big time on the Kings. Batting in the penultimate over, Mandeep was left with no choice but to attack Siddharth Kaul. He tried to do the same and ended up holing out in the deep and walked back with just 2 runs to his name.
Sam Curran – 5/10
Sam Curran came in to bat in the final over and had some serious pressure on him. He was up against a veteran off-spinner which made things tougher for him. He did very well to pick up 5 runs off the three balls that he faced in the over. Earlier in the match, he had a decent run with the ball. He bowled his complete quota of four overs and conceded 30 runs. He failed to pick up any wicket though.
Sarfaraz Khan – Not Assigned
Sarfaraz Khan did not get an opportunity to bat in this match.
Ravichandran Ashwin – 7/10
KXIP skipper R Ashwin had a good day at the office. His captaincy was top-notch and he managed to restrict the power-packed SRH lineup to a total of 150. With the ball in hand, he broke the Shankar-Warner partnership by dismissing the former at a crucial stage of the match. He also inflicted the big run out of Mohammad Nabi to sink the ship of the Orange Army. Ashwin finished with 1/30 in his four overs.
Ankit Rajpoot – 7.5/10
Ankit Rajpoot was phenomenal with the ball in the match. The lanky pacer stuck to his lines and plans. He absolutely kept things tight at his end and did not let the opposition batters run away with easy runs. In the four overs that he bowled, he gave away only 21 runs. He was unfortunate to have not picked up any wicket in the match.
Mohammed Shami – 6/10
Mohammad Shami had a decent time with the ball in the match. Shami was quite economical in the first three overs that he bowled. However, he was taken away for runs in his final over. He eventually conceded 30 runs in his four overs and accounted for Manish Pandey’s wicket.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman – 6.5/10
Mujeeb Ur Rahman played a very big role for his side in the match. The Afghanistani bowler bagged the big wicket of Jonny Bairstow, the in-form batter early on in the innings. Bairstow failed to pick him up and felt the pressure a little too soon. He gave away his wicket to Mujeeb. Mujeeb returned with figures of 1/34 in his four overs.
