The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continued their unbeaten run at their home ground in the IPL with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) being on the receiving end this time. The KKR team were put to bat first on yet another turning Chepauk track. Poor shot selections and tight bowling from the hosts restricted KKR to 108/9 despite an unbeaten 44-ball fifty from Andre Russell. The Super Kings struggled to get going in the chase but completed it with 16 balls and seven wickets to spare.
All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during yet another low-scoring game in Chennai:
KKR’s lowest ever:
108/9 – The total of 108/9 by the Kolkata Knight Riders in this game is their lowest in the history of the IPL after playing full 20 overs. They finished with 119/9 from 20 overs during the 2013 season game in Kolkata also against the Chennai Super Kings.
The 108/9 is the 3rd lowest total that CSK conceded after bowling full 20 overs in an IPL game. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) could only post 92/8 and 95/9 respectively in the 2009 and 2015 editions against CSK.
Deepak claims IPL record:
20 – Number of dot balls bowled by Deepak Chahar in his four overs during this game; the most by any bowler in a single IPL inning. There are multiple instances of a bowler delivering exactly 19 dot balls but none of them bowled more than 19 until Chahar.
A record stand:
29* – The unbeaten 29-run stand between Andre Russell and Harry Gurney is the joint-highest 10th wicket partnership in the IPL. The Rajasthan Royals pair of Siddharth Trivedi and Munaf Patel also added 29* for the 10th wicket in the 2009 season against Delhi Daredevils.
Russell scores yet another fifty:
3 – Andre Russell has scored a fifty in each of his previous three innings against the Chennai Super Kings. He scored 193 runs across his last three innings against CSK without getting dismissed. He also hit 10 fours and 18 sixes against Chennai.
44 – Balls Russell needed for raising his fifty; easily the highest number of deliveries Russell needed for any of his 17 fifty-plus scores in Twenty20 cricket. His previous slowest T20 fifty came off 32 balls for Windies against BCB XI in a warm-up game in 2011 which was Russell’s maiden T20 fifty.
A milestone game for Chawla:
150 – This game was Piyush Chawla’s 150th in his IPL career making him the 11th player to feature in 150 IPL matches. This was also Chawla’s 200th Twenty20 appearance on Indian soil. Only six players before him have featured in 200+ Twenty20s in India.
