Rajasthan Royals (RR) managed to beat the Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. With the victory, the Royals, captained by the newly-appointed skipper in Steve Smith, stayed alive in the tournament, though with a lot to do.  Meanwhile, the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai-based franchise remained on the second spot of the points table.

De Kock leads the charge

The Royals won the toss and elected to field first. The decision paid dividends as they restricted RR to 161 for five in 20 overs. Shreyas Gopal struck first blood as he got rid of Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma, who gave a simple caught and bowled chance to the bowler. However, keeper Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav got the visitors back into the contest with a partnership of 97 runs from 68 deliveries.

Stuart Binny got rid of Yadav in the 14th over to break the stand. Yadav got 34 from 33 with a four and a six. De Kock went on to notch his half-century in 34 balls and ended up scoring 65 runs off 47 balls with the help of six boundaries and a couple of sixes. Hardik Pandya got two lifelines, courtesy of dropped chances by Jofra Archer, who also dropped De Kock’s catch. Pandya scored 23 from 15 deliveries.

The Royals script a comprehensive win

Sanju Samson and Ajinkya Rahane opened the batting for the Royals and helped their team get off to a quick start courtesy of a 39-run stand from 22 balls. Samson was looking after scoring 35 from 19, but he perished to leg-spinner Rahul Chahar. Samson tried to go downtown only to hole out to Suryakumar. Rahane’s poor run of form continued as he was Chahar’s first victim after getting 12 at a run-a-ball.

Ajinkya got out in the eighth over and in the same over, Chahar rattled Ben Stokes’ woodwork as well to set the cat amongst the pigeons’ camp in the Royals’ dugout. Nevertheless, Steve Smith and Riyan Parag took charge. Parag was the more attacking of the two and he perished following a knock of 43.  Smith remained not out on 59 runs from 48 balls with five fours and a six to take RR over the line.
