The Delhi Capitals (DC) have won their sixth game of the season in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). They defeated the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by five wickets in the game which went to the last over. But Shreyas Iyer was at his coolest best who made sure that DC didn’t botch up another chase with a collapse. He and Shikhar Dhawan were brilliant in the chase and despite the little bit of a stutter, the home team managed to win the game.
The chase began with the DC losing a quick wicket of Prithvi Shaw thanks to Shikhar Dhawan who sold him down the river after calling mid-pitch. However, the left-hander made amends for the same and kept on taking the game deep. He stitched a decent partnership with Shreyas Iyer and the scoreboard ticked along nicely.
The duo mixed caution with aggression nicely to stitch a stand of 92 runs in 62 balls. Dhawan was looking good at 56 but misread a slower one from Hardus Viljoen to sky the ball high in the 14th over. Ravi Ashwin took a good tumbling catch and it seemed that the visitors were still in the game. Rishabh Pant lacked game awareness yet again and played a poor shot with the team needing 36 off 30 deliveries.
Though Shreyas Iyer kept his cool and made sure there was no collapse in the offing this time around. He scored a half-century even as Colin Ingram played the supporting role to keep things calm at the other end. But the South African looked to finish things off and was castled by Mohammed Shami after which a needless run-out of Axar Patel followed.
Things went to the last over with six needing for the home team. Sam Curran was handed over the responsibility and the youngster did really well but Shreyas Iyer was determined on the day and he fittingly scored the winning runs as DC registered their sixth win of the season.
KXIP fall short despite Gayle storm
Earlier, the KXIP started off decently with KL Rahul taking on Sandeep Lamichhane but the Nepal leggie got the better of the Indian opener in the same over to have the last laugh. Even Mayank Agarwal and David Miller failed to make any sort of contribution to the team’s total. However, Chris Gayle was in the mood on the day. He started attacking from the word go.
Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra faced the wrath of the Universe Boss. Gayle hit some big sixes during his stay in the middle and went to smash 69 runs off 37 balls. His innings was laced by six fours and as many maximums. Unfortunately, there were no notable contributions from others and when Lamichhane got him, the score was only 106/4 in the 13th over.
Mandeep Singh managed to score 30 runs but he could never change the momentum of the game. Punjab kept losing wickets and crossed the 160-run mark only due to Harpreet Brar hitting the last ball for a huge six. They finished with 163 runs on the board for the loss of seven wickets after 20 overs. Eventually, it didn’t prove to be enough as DC chased it down courtesy half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer.
