The Delhi Capitals (DC) are going from strength to strength in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). The team, captained by Shreyas Iyer, beat the Rajasthan Royals (RR) by six wickets and moved to the top of the points table, dethroning the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In the meantime, the Royals’journey in the tournament almost came to an end, barring a miracle.
Rahane steals the show
The Capitals won the toss and elected to field first and the decision backfired somehow as the hosts racked up a significant 191 for six in 20 overs. Sanju Samson perished to a run out in the second over without even getting to face a delivery. Thereafter, Ajinkya Rahane and skipper Steve Smith took charge and cobbled together a partnership of 130 runs off 72 balls that set the platform for a final flourish.
Smith got his half-century and he fell prey to Axar Patel as the stand came to an end. Ben Stokes was dismissed on eight by Chris Morris. Ashton Turner’s IPL campaign went from bad to worse and he managed to bag his third consecutive duck. Meanwhile, Rahane got to his century in a mere 58 balls and stayed not out. Stuart Binny played a quickfire knock of 19 runs from 13 balls to propel his team’s score.
Dhawan and Shaw take DC home
DC got off to a fast start in their run-chase courtesy of a stand of 72 runs off 45 balls for the opening wicket. The duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw made use of the powerplay and it was eventually broken by Shreyas Gopal, who dismissed the former. Dhawan played a decent hand of 54 runs off 27 balls with eight fours and a couple of sixes. In the next over, Riyan Parag got rid of Shreyas Iyer.
Thereafter, Rishabh Pant took the onus on himself and played his strokes without nurturing any inhibitions. He accomplished his half-century in 26 balls and got his team close. Shaw was dismissed after he scored 42 off 39 balls. Sherfane Rutherford played a couple of glorious shots and he was nipped out by Dhawal Kulkarni. Pant remained not out on 78 from 36 with six fours and three sixes.
