Royal Challengers Bangalore are not leaving their hopes of sealing a playoffs spot as they have won four of their last five matches after the six consecutive defeats. AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis looked to be cautious during the middle overs but ensured the hosts reach a record mark of 202/4. The result of the game was decided in the last three overs of the RCB innings as they scored as many as 64 runs while the Kings XI Punjab got only 18 when they needed 36 runs in their final three.

RCB’s hat-trick
Royal Challengers Bangalore recorded a hat-trick of wins as they defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 10 runs in Kolkata, Chennai Super Kings by 1-run at home and now Kings XI Punjab by 17 runs also in the home game. Thus, RCB recorded their first instance of three consecutive wins in the IPL by defending a target. In fact, Royal Challengers have won all the four matches they played against the Kings XI in the IPL since the start of 2018.
The RCB domination
The scoring rate in the death overs have always been crucial in the IPL and RCB have shown what type of destruction can be done during that phase. They hold the record for scoring most runs scored in the last five overs (16-20), last four overs (17-20), last three overs (18-20) and now last two overs (19-20).
First three records were created by RCB during the 2016 game against the Gujarat Lions where they scored 75 in the last three, 89 runs in the last four and as many as 112 in the final five overs. Their tally of 45 runs in the last two overs in that game was also the highest but was levelled by three other teams including once in this season.
RCB gained their record back as they smashed as many as 48 runs in the last two overs against Kings XI Punjab. 21 runs were scored in the penultimate over bowled by Mohammed Shami when De Villiers hit a hat-trick sixes. The final over bowled by Hardus Viljoen was proved expensive for KXIP as he conceded 27 runs.
Gayle, ABD and RCB
AB de Villiers was adjudged Player of the Match and this was his 20th in IPL. Only Chris Gayle (21) has won more Player of the Match awards in the IPL. Out of 20, ABD received 18 while playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore; the most by any player for a single team. In this aspect, he went past Chris Gayle’s 17 awards in the IPL for RCB.
Success tale for Umesh vs KXIP
Umesh Yadav claimed as many as 29 wickets in the IPL against the Kings XI Punjab in only 18 matches. These are the most number of wickets in the IPL for a player against an opponent. Umesh surpassed Dwayne Bravo (28 wickets against Mumbai Indians) with his 3-wicket haul in this game. The speedster has as many as five Player of the Match awards in his kitty in the IPL against KXIP.
