The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) tried their hearts out after winning three matches on the trot in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). However, they couldn’t carry on and got knocked out after their 16-run defeat against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi. In the meantime, the Capitals, captained by Shreyas Iyer, qualified for the playoffs of the T20 tournament.
Dhawan and Iyer guide the Capitals
On a strip that seemed slow, the hosts won the toss and elected today first. Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan started well with a stand of 35 runs off 21 balls. Umesh Yadav gave RCB the first breakthrough, dismissing Parthiv, who scored 18 off 10. Dhawan looked good and he along with Shreyas Iyer cobbled together a partnership of 68 runs off 53 balls. Shikhar reached his fifty in 36 balls but got out then.
Yuzvendra Chahal nipped him out. Iyer also accomplished a well-compiled half-century, however, perished to Washington Sundar. Colin Ingram found the boundary a couple of times and fell prey to Navdeep Saini. Having lost a bit of momentum in the middle, Axar Patel and Sherfane Rutherford racked up 28 and 16 runs respectively and helped the Capitals post a decent score of 187 for five in 20 overs.
Challengers knocked out
The Challengers blazed away to 63 in 5.5 overs courtesy of Parthiv Patel and Virat Kohli. Patel played his shots and notched 39 off 20 with seven fours and a six. Kohli got a lifeline once, but couldn’t capitalize on it and got out after getting 23 from 17. AB de Villiers had a rather rough day as he could only manage 17 runs before becoming Rutherford’s first T20 wicket. Axar Patel took a sharp catch in the deep.
Shivam Dube went for his strokes and cleared the ropes, two times to get 24 from 16 balls. Heinrich Klaasen mistimed a sweep shot only for Rishabh Pant to take a simple catch. Gurkeerat Singh Maan came out all guns blazing and notched 27 off 19 balls. Ishant Sharma dismissed him. Marcus Stoinis remained not out on 25 from 20 balls, but that didn’t turn out to be enough for the RCB.
