The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) started their innings by scoring 14 runs off the first over. If you thought that was a lot, it was just the beginning. More destruction was yet to come as the innings progressed. The side took less than 11 overs to score the first 100 runs out of which the openers together added 96. While Chris Lynn scored 54 from 29 balls, Shubman Gill wasn’t someone who would settle to be the second fiddle.
He put all of his class on display and played his best knock ever in the IPL. The 19-year-old took 45 balls to score 76 runs in an innings that included four sixes and six fours. Carnage then took over. Andre Russell went all guns blazing after an uncharacteristic start. While he took 12 balls to score the first 6 runs, he went berserk later on. 55 runs were scored in the last three overs and Dre Russ remained unbeaten on 40-ball 80 as KKR finished with a mammoth score of 232/2.
An improbable ask for the Mumbai Indians
Such a massive total was never chased down in the IPL and it wasn’t going to be easy for the visitors. Moreover, they lost Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock and Evin Lewis quite early in the chase. However, Hardik Pandya single-handedly took his team close to the target.
He gave the KKR team a massive scare with his scintillating hitting. The all-rounder played a sublime knock and scored 91 runs in just 34 balls. However, his efforts weren’t sufficient. The Mumbai Indians lost the match by 34 runs and will now have to wait a little longer to qualify for the playoffs.
Here are the KKR Player Ratings for the match:
Chris Lynn – 8/10
Chris Lynn did nothing wrong in this game. But since all the KKR batsmen have performed so well, the rating has got to be relative. The Aussies cricketer earns an 8-rating for his 29-ball 54 in this encounter. He took advantage of the powerplay and hit 8 fours, 2 sixes in his innings.
Shubman Gill – 9/10
Shubman Gill has got more opportunities to showcase his talent in this season as he has been sent out to open more often. The 19-year-old played one of his best knocks ever facing some of the best bowlers in the world. He played some glorious shots on either side of the wicket and scored 76 runs. While he gets 10 points for his efforts, he loses out slightly on the final rating as he has missed the opportunity of scoring a century for the second time this season.
Andre Russell – 10/10
The Superman from Jamaica was adamant about batting higher up the order and even expressed his views publicly. He finally got his chance to bat at three in this encounter and didn’t disappoint one bit. Dre Russ started slow and caught up pace later in the innings. He did the bulk of the scoring in the final few overs and remained unbeaten on 80 from 40 balls. He picked a couple of wickets with the ball as well and gobbled up a couple of catches too.
Dinesh Karthik – 7.5/10
It is tough to give the rating to Dinesh Karthik in this match. He had the heart to send Russell ahead of Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana. The right-hander promoted himself up the order and fitted into his role really well. Even though he scored just 15 runs from 7 balls, the contribution was still massive in this game. Karthik was good with his captaincy as well as behind the stumps. Hence, gets 7.5 points.
Nitish Rana – Not Assigned
Didn’t bat in this game.
Robin Uthappa – Not Assigned
Didn’t bat in this game.
Rinku Singh – Not Assigned
Didn’t bat in this game.
Sunil Narine – 5.5/10
Sunil Narine bowled decently early on in this game. He dismissed Quinton de Kock and Kieron Pollard in his four overs. However, he was quite expensive in the last two overs that he bowled and thus loses out on some points. He gave away 44 runs in the four overs he bowled.
Piyush Chawla – 1/10
Piyush Chawla, after the brilliant outing in the last game, was blown away in this match. Hardik Pandya, in particular, targetted him and smashed him all over the Eden. The leg-spinner conceded 57 runs in his four overs and only got some respite in the 20th over of the match where he dismissed Krunal Pandya.
Sandeep Warrier – 6/10
Sandeep Warrier might have bowled an economical spell in this match. But he bowled all his four overs before Hardik Pandya began his carnage. He conceded 29 runs in the four overs that he bowled.
Harry Gurney – 8/10
Harry Gurney was terrific at the death in this game. He was the one who dismissed Hardik who was taking the game away from the KKR. Gurney maintained his cool in the high-pressure situation and executed his slower balls really well. Since he got the wicket of Hardik, he scores some extra points.
