The match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was completely dominated by the home team. Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni were terrific with the bat in this encounter and helped CSK put up a massive total on the board on a tough track. Then, the spinners followed up this brilliant batting display with some excellent bowling.
Both Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir did a great job in the game to help their team register a massive 80-run victory. The Super Kings are now back on the top of the points table and are likely to hold onto one of the top two spots. Moreover, their ‘net run rate’ has rocketed up as well after this win. The batting of the visitors in the match was hardly up to the mark.
Suresh Raina plays an important knock, MS Dhoni adds the finishing touches
CSK got off to a horrible start in the game after they were put into bat first by the opposition. Shane Watson couldn’t get going by any means and struggled during his stay in the middle. The Australian faced nine balls before he walked back to the pavilion for a duck. However, Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis then built up an 83-run partnership. While the former was the aggressor, the latter tried to anchor the innings. The South African skipper found the going tough during the majority of his stay in the middle.
However, he got some big shots going just before getting out. Faf scored 39 runs in 41 balls and perished in an attempt to accelerate. Raina, after a brilliant 37-ball 59, got out in the 15th over. Ravindra Jadeja, who came in next, played an aggressive cameo where he got 25 runs in 10 balls. MS Dhoni, who started slow, blew DC apart towards the end of the innings. He finished with two consecutive sixes and remained unbeaten on 44 from 22 balls as CSK finished with a massive 179/4 in 20 overs.
CSK is unstoppable when the spinners get going
The Capitals were struck with a big blow in the chase as they lost Prithvi Shaw in the first over for just four runs. However, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer consolidated and make the most of the field restrictions with some aggressive cricket. The left-hander got out in the final over of the powerplay for 19 runs but DC scored 59 runs in the first six overs.
Once Dhawan fell, it was a real struggle for Iyer and co. While the skipper kept on hustling at one end, he kept losing partners at the other end. The shot selection and temperament have been the biggest nemesis for Rishabh Pant this season and that has done his undoing yet again. From 62/2, Delhi was brought down to 85/8 courtesy some brilliant bowling from the spinners. Iyer was the lone warrior for his team and scored 44 runs. In the end, Delhi were bowled out for 99 runs and lost the game by 80 runs.
