Mumbai Indians opened their points tally by defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a last-ball thriller at the Chinnaswamy. Rohit Sharma’s 48 and Suryakumar Yadav’s 38 pushed MI to 142/3 before they lost four wickets for five runs. Hardik Pandya scored a quick-fire 14-ball 32* as the visitors finished with 187/8. AB de Villiers dominated the chase with his an unbeaten 41-ball 70 and was backed by Virat Kohli’s 32-ball 46. The game went down to the last over where Lasith Malinga successfully defended 17 runs.

RCB’s poorest start:

1 – For the first time in 12 IPL seasons, the Royal Challengers Bangalore lost each of their first two matches. During the 2008, 2010, 2017 and 2018 seasons, RCB won their 2nd game after losing the first. In the remaining seven editions, the RCB had won their first game of the season.


A first in a defeat for ABD:

1 – This game is the first in the IPL where AB de Villiers remained unbeaten during an unsuccessful chase in the IPL. RCB won 12 games while Delhi Daredevils won three when ABD was unbeaten during a chase in the IPL.


Milestones for Kohli and De Villiers:

105 – The first of the six maximums from AB de Villiers in this game is his 100th six in the IPL at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. He thus became only the 2nd player to hit 100 sixes at a venue in the IPL. Chris Gayle has 126 sixes in the IPL at this very venue.


4032 – De Villiers became the 10th player to complete 4000 runs in the IPL. He is the 3rd overseas player and the 4th quickest to the milestone as he needed only 131 innings.


5000 – Virat Kohli became the 2nd player after Suresh Raina (5034) to complete 5000 runs in the IPL. Raina achieved this milestone during the first game of the ongoing season.


Chahal continues his success in Bangalore:

53 – Yuzvendra Chahal became the first bowler to claim 50 wickets in the Twenty20 format at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. He is the 3rd Indian to bag 50+ T20 wickets at a venue after Amit Mishra (69 at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi) and Harbhajan Singh (53 at Wankhede, Mumbai).


4 – Chahal’s 4-wicket haul in this game is the 4th in the IPL matches between RCB and MI. All the four 4-fers were recorded in Bangalore including three by the home team bowlers. David Wiese’s 4/33 in 2015 and Samuel Badree’s 4/9 in the 2017 seasons were the other two 4-fers for RCB against MI. Interestingly, all the three 4-wicket hauls of RCB against Mumbai came on the losing side.
