IPL 2019: MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene doesn’t want Bumrah to sit at home for World Cup
Bumrah has been playing IPL since 2013 and he has taken 63 wickets so far in 61 games at an impressive average of below 29.
A lot is being said about Jasprit Bumrah, India’s trump card in the upcoming World Cup and his workload during the Indian Premier League (IPL) that starts on March 23. The ace pacer’s evolution makes him one the best assets for captain Virat Kohli in the WC and his form makes things even more sensitive about overplaying him in the IPL. A former India cricketer even said that Bumrah needs to be protected in cotton wool, such is his importance at the moment.
However, the fast bowler’s franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) would also like to see him delivering for them in the IPL. It will be seen how the franchise and the national team management keep the channel of communication open overseeing Bumrah shouldering moderate workload ahead of the showpiece event. Meanwhile, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene is of the opinion that India should not lose sleep over the pacer’s workload.
They can’t stay at home
“The work load needs to be managed but at the same time they need to play good competitive cricket. I think India has managed their players well over the years giving them breaks. I think your best players need to play. They can’t stay at home and turn up and perform. It’s about that fine balance and as long as we can manage that, they will be fine,” former Sri Lanka skipper Jayawardene was quoted as saying by India Today.
Bumrah has missed quite a few games in the recent past in between producing his mesmerising spells and that is another reason why certain voices are anxious. Former India physio John Gloster made a research today on Bumrah’s unique bowling action and the risk it might pose to his back.
Gloster assured that the 25-year-old bowler’s action doesn’t ring any alarm bell. The Indian team management of late used the bowler judiciously so as to preserve him over a long period. Bumrah has been playing IPL since 2013 and he has taken 63 wickets so far in 61 games at an impressive average of below 29 and an economy rate of below eight.
